Ear Cropping Information
About Ear Cropping: Ear cropping is a surgical procedure where a portion of the puppy's ears is removed to make them stand erect. This is often done for aesthetic reasons or to meet breed standards in show dogs. The procedure is typically performed when the puppy is between 7 and 12 weeks old.
Procedure and Care:
-
Surgery: The procedure is carried out under anesthesia by a qualified veterinarian. The ears are shaped and stitched to achieve the desired look.
-
Post-Operative Care: After surgery, the ears need to be taped and posted to train them to stand upright. This process can take several weeks and requires consistent care and monitoring to ensure proper healing.
-
Cost: Due to the additional care and medical expenses, we charge an extra $550 for puppies with cropped ears. This fee covers the cost of the surgery and the necessary post-operative care.
Tail Docking Policy:
-
Standard Practice: For Giant Schnauzers, tail docking is a common practice and is usually performed during the puppy’s first veterinary visit. This aligns with the breed standards and the preferences of the majority of our buyers.
-
Natural Tails: If you prefer your puppy to have a natural, undocked tail, please inform us in advance. A full, non-refundable payment for the puppy will be required to secure this request. This ensures that we can accommodate your preference before the automatic docking procedure is carried out.
Why Choose Ear Cropping and Tail Docking?
-
Breed Standards: Many Giant Schnauzer enthusiasts prefer the traditional look of cropped ears and docked tails. This look is also often required for show dogs.
-
Health and Hygiene: Some believe that cropped ears and docked tails can reduce the risk of certain infections and injuries.
Considerations:
-
Ethical Concerns: Ear cropping and tail docking are controversial procedures. They are banned or restricted in many countries due to animal welfare concerns. We encourage you to thoroughly research and consider these procedures before making a decision.
-
Aesthetic Preference: While these procedures are standard in the breed, your preference for a natural look is respected and accommodated where possible.
